If you are part of a Special Assessment District and cannot afford to pay the installments you may be eligible for a deferment through the State of Michigan.

To qualify for the deferment you or your spouse (if home is jointly owned) must:

1. Be 65 years or older; and

2. Have been a Michigan resident for 5 years or more and must have owned and occupied the homestead for 5 years or more; and

3. Be a citizen of the United States; and

4. Have a household income not exceeding the limit set for the year by law. For the year 2007 the household income cannot exceed $20,308.00; and

5. Have a special assessment of $300.00 or more; and

6. If a mortgage or an unpaid balance on a land contract encumbers the homestead, a deferment of special assessments shall not be made without the written consent of the mortgagee or the land contract vendor. The consent letter must state that the mortgagee or the land contract vendor understands that the lien by the State of Michigan is the 'First Lien' on the property.

For more information or if you would like to apply for a special assessment deferment contact Beverly Spoor, White Lake Township Treasurer.
