Citizen's Academy

What is it?

The White Lake Township Police Department, in conjunction with the White Lake Township Board and Fire Department, has created the White Lake Citizens Academy. The Citizens Academy is a 30-hour block of instruction designed to give the public a working knowledge of the Police Department, Fire Department and Township Office’s personnel and policies.

It consists of a series of classes, held once each week for two to three hours. The instruction is comprehensive, covering a different area of the Police Department, Fire Department and Township each week. Officers, Firefighters and Township Board members assigned to that particular division, conduct each instructional block.

WHO MAY ATTEND?

The class is comprised of various individuals from the White Lake community. Doctors,architects, homemakers, laborers, students, secretaries, salespersons and others are encouraged to apply for admission. The Academy is held twice each year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The minimum age for enrollment is 21 and you must live or work in the Township of White Lake.

THE PURPOSE?

The White Lake Citizens Academy was created in order to provide enough information to the citizens that attend so that they may make informed judgments about the Police Department, Fire Department and Township activity. It is further hoped that the instruction will increase Police and Fire awareness whereas to dispel suspicions and misconceptions and to increase Police and Fire community rapport though this educative process. The departments, in turn, become more aware of the feelings and concerns of the community from the student’s interaction and input. It is, indeed, a two-way learning experience.

The White Lake Citizens Academy covers such diverse topics as training, communications, police procedures, criminal investigations, judicial law, crime prevention, tactical team, firefighting procedures, medical examiner procedures, and township procedures.
